Hip-Hop Just Got…Deeper?

HIP-HOP JUST GOT…DEEPER?

By Elisia Collins
The Raid is not your typical rapper. Within a two year period, this artist from Washington, DC single handedly wrote, produced and engineered his debut album entitled Primordial, and then officially established the media company he now uses to distribute it.
The Raid is dark and intense, yet speaks from a deeply philosophical and analytical perspective. “I think my rap style is somewhere between Common and DMX”, the artist told me during a recent telephone interview.
He was given the moniker RAID due to his intense focus and relentless lyrical ability. During his earlier years, he developed a passion for all music and studied the similarities within genres such as Rock, R&B and Classical. As a teenager, he also began playing instruments and listening to music from around the world. As he became more socially aware, he decided to make a difference in the world by utilizing the global appeal of hip-hop to create music that all people could relate to.  Where as most rappers portray life on the streets, The Raid utilizes his intensity to promote spiritual growth and personal development; topics not usually heard on commercial rap albums.
Primordial was released Fall of 2009 under his own company Idea Fortress Media Group, and The Raid describes it as “fire”. “I’ve got something for everyone on this album, and still managed to keep my perspective” he claims.  “If you love [hip-hop] but been frustrated with its direction in recent years, then you’re ready for me.”
In his personal blog, he states that this project he hopes will inspire a new era in hip-hop music. His goal he says is not to change hip-hop, but to promote an increased variety of styles and encourage other artists to be different. “What happens when you flood a market with too much of the same kind of stuff?” he asked, “you decrease that stuff’s value”.
Because it’s traditionally difficult for a new artist of any musical genre to establish themselves in a huge market, The Raid decided to promote his first album by offering free downloads at his website: www.raiddeva.com. When asked if he will continue this trend with other projects, he simply laughed and said “first rounds always on me!”
